Doom didn't kill the Amiga...Wolfenstein 3D did
Wolfenstein 3D released by id Software in 1992 brought in a change to video games. 2D games were no longer cool and texture mapped 3d rendered games were taking over. However, the ray casting technology presented a challenge if you owned an Amiga computer - it simply wasn't capable of running Wolfenstein 3d and in many ways Wolfenstein 3d can be seen as a major milestone that determined the fate of the Commodore Amiga that went bankrupt in 1994. In this episode we take a closer look at the Amiga and its many FPS clones that attempted to emulate the technology and success of Wolfenstein 3D, but ultimately led to the demise of Commodore.

Why the limitations of the N64 and PS1 mattered

    Wolf3D actually did use a bitplane mode of VGA (not mode 13h). The real advantage (besides the increased CPU power) was that VGA contains a bunch of useful hardware bit operations such as masking and parallel writes, so a clever programmer (i.e. Carmack) was able to turn the planar mode into a performance advantage. If you look at the Wolf3D source file WL_SCALE.C[1] (which draws the billboard sprites), you can see genius utilization of VGA's planar write mode, in the ScaleLine function. It always writes 4 pixels at a time, but it works out (through efficient table lookups) a bitmask, based on which of the 4 pixels need to be written and which are transparent. So there is no need to ever _read_ from video memory just to calculate the byte value to write back, it's all done in hardware. I'm not familiar with the equivalent hardware on the Amiga, but I would guess these masking operations on the VGA hardware are what made the difference between "can run Wolfenstein" and "can't run Wolfenstein". You are not right saying Phil should stop to communicate with fans, with the Xbox audience. He must continue to do that. But the problem is there - he is lying almost all the time, Xbox is lying. What they, Phil and Xbox, must do right now is just to stop lying. To tell the truth and stop being corpos with the fans. Direct communication itself is a great feature which differentiates Xbox from competitors, Sony and Nintendo.

    "the gameplay itself isn't very special" - that's the reason for the Amiga's death right there. You can name a bunch of good Amiga games but considering the whole library, it pales compared to the library of any Japanese system, even the 8 bit ones.

    A full video explaining the difference between the Amiga's "weird" graphics mode with planes and the PC graphics mode would be interesting. That part got me very curious and confused, like "wait... you can't just write a value to a memory adress and get a pixel on the screen?". I didn't think VGA mode 13h was "special", I thought it was "normal", I found it very interesting that Amiga works in a way that's so readically different.

    Not sure I agree with the title of this video. All anyone could talk about in Amiga circles around that time was how to compete with Doom. Gloom, Fears, and Alien Breed 3D all came out within months of each other and were all Doom clones, attempting to replicate similar lighting, variable floor heights, non-orthogonal walls and textured floor/ceilings - all of the things that made Doom such a significant step up over Wolf3D. I don’t recall the Amiga scene getting excited about Wolf3D any more than Catacomb 3-D, which was showcasing the same tech on PC in 1991.

    These days it is all about Doom (Wolfenstein) as heralds of new gaming age, but it is forgoten than X Wing on PC with flat shaded polygons was equaly impressive and equaly far from Amiga's reach and still we don't even have a tech demo for Amiga. Star Wars were still un-spoiled and fresh in early 90's and X Wing created a lot of buzz. Also, amigists already knew and longed for Wing Commander 1 and 2 on PC, knowing that it was out of Amiga's reach. Wing Commander eventualy came to A500 but with no less than 5 frames per second and in some casess just 1 or 2.

    When I was 14 I read a book in the Waterstones bookstore called Flights of Fantasy that had programming techniques for mode 13h, 3d matrix routines, polygon drawing, etc. I couldn't afford it (£30) but by the end of the day I'd prepared a plan to steal it by memorising the shop layout and the movements of the staff. By the end of the week I'd successfully shoplifted it. Was it the wrong thing to do - yes, but nothing was going to deny me that knowledge. Kids these days have it easy with all the info on the internet.

    Game passes, paywalls, loot boxes, microtransactions, pay to win, overpriced DLC and many other things are all part of the symptoms of what the games industry is experiencing right now. It's not just on XBOX, the whole industry sucks at the moment. It's focus is entirely on revenue and not on the core experience itself. If Baldurs Gate 3 can release without all this microtransaction money grab crap then so can other games. It finally seems to be slowly happening that gamers are finally turning away from all these greedy practices. The only way they will listen is to hit them right where it hurts, in the wallet. To be honest I really wouldn't mind another video game crash like we had in the 80's. Something needs to give and a total reset and reevaluation of the industries practices seems to be the only thing that will fix it. We need more bedroom coders like we also had in the 80's. Some of the most amazing games ever made were made by one or two guys in a bedroom wasting free time seeing what they could make. Games aren't made by gamers anymore, they're made by executives and they always kill everything they touch, from movies to music. Bethesda and its horse armor has a lot of explaining to do.

    Anyone playing arcade games could understand that the future of gaming was 3d, from the time of SEGA's superscalers dominating the arcades. The Amiga died because Commodore was incompetent. SEGA consoles died for the exact same reason. If I was Commodore, I would have released a totally new Amiga in 1987, one that could play Outrun/Powerdrift/Afterburner/Galaxy Force/Space Harrier with full sprite scaling and rotation, but not with a hardware sprite engine, but with a 3d vector graphics engine and texture mapping unit. And I would have added emulation of the original chipset through software/hardware. And that would allow Wolfestein 3d/Doom on the Amiga as well way before the PC even thought about it. It would be so jaw dropping at the time, that even at a hefty price it would sell really well. If that was around back then, we would all have Amigas today :-).

    • @SomeOrangeCat
      @SomeOrangeCat 28 секунд тому

      That's really just half the equation. The other is that Amiga computers were only being made by Commodore, where as PCs could be made by anyone. PC compatibles were hardware standard, not a brand. That meant greater proliferation.

    "This is almost a lost art form" If you want to see somewhere this still happens, look at Scratch programming. There are lots of users finding weird quirks to get around the limitations of the system. For example: no in built case sensitivity in string handling? Use the fact that sprite names are case sensitive to build case sensitivity. Then there's Griffpatch's sprite ordering algorithm that uses the way that sprites are rendered in order to determine which ones should be in front based on their position. And there's whatever the hell all those 3D engine programmers are doing.

    Let’s be real… when Commodore failed as a business the Amiga had no chance. I think a lot of weight was thrown behind PC’s in the 80’s and its dominance in the 90’s was inevitable. It would have been great to see Amiga continue as a platform into the future, but like everything else… it probably would have ended up using x86 or Power PC architecture eventually like most things.

    This kinda demonstrates why DRM feels fundamentally flawed to me. It's basically trying to guard against a MITM attack, but one where the intended consumer and the attacker are the same entity. The device is owned by the consumer, and breaking DRM is really only a question of difficulty and ingenuity, not possibility. At least, until we get into dystopian worlds where you e.g. can't play the games you own without some cloud service giving the OK, which we are getting ever closer to.

    08:25 man, I could not agree with this more. The majority of Japanese games companies approach PR this way and they are almost never embroiled in some ridiculous twitter drama. If an unpopular decision is made, devs and execs chatting shit online doesn't exacerbate it. Look at Fromsoft, you never hear a peep from them until they say: "game is in development", then "game releases on X date", then "game has released, enjoy".

    It's a double-sided coin. On one side, you have passionate developers who just want to create something, and on the other side, you have corporations that couldn't care less about what's being made. They don't care about the people working hard, missing time with their families. The only thing on their minds is a product.
